Floridian Dirt

I built a fence this weekend. In the past this was always a long arduous experience, but this weekend was different.

Typically when you build a fence you start out by setting posts. For the fence I was building this meant digging holes, mixing concrete and letting it all set up over night to provide a firm stable backbone for the pre-fab sections of wood fencing. I have to admit that after living in Florida for over two years this was the first time I've ever dug a hole.

I was literally speechless.

In Arkansas when you dig a hole, you have to compete with rocks, roots, clay, under ground cliff shelves, anything and everything that can be in the ground you'll hit trying to dig a hole. In Florida all I hit was top soil and sand. I literally dug three fit in less then a minute. I actually had to fill up my hole because it was too deep for the post!!! I mean really!

So I am officially adding the fact that you can dig a hole in Florida in under a minute to my lists of things I like about this state.

All in all it was a good weekend. I got the fence finished with the help of Jacki and her brother, Bob. It will hopefully be a deterrent to any thieves or vandals, and the house looks really good enclosed with fence.

As an extra bonus I also got to meet both of my neighbors, and see some coyotes. But that'll be a story for later.

coyotes??

can't say we've ever tried to dig a hole up here in mass -- maybe we would feel the love for the state when we attempt to dig thru the permafrost, lol.
